Three Sure Principles on Choosing Healthy Foods
If the food is considered healthy then why does it require a guideline? Shouldn't we just freely eat?
To answer such questions consider these things: Corn and Soybeans by virtue of there original characteristics are considered healthy and essential to nutrition but a large percentage of such crops harvested are GMO crops which means they have been altered with the latest molecular techniques. A health Publication stated that "introducing foreign gene into a plant may create a new allergen or cause an allergic reaction in susceptible individuals" (1) Grapes and watermelons are considered healthy but the fact that they can be seedless should not be considered a worthy convenience when compared to the instructions from Genesis 1:12 KJV states:
"And the Earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit after, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw it was good."
Palm oil is considered healthy but the process of extracting the oil from the nut requires the use of an industrial chemical hexane that is not completely removed in the final stages. Hexane is a chemical made from crude oil and is widely used as an industrial cleaner and degreaser. "It has been recognized for more than 40 years to cause long lasting and permanent nerve damage in feet, legs hands and arms." (2)
Wine is also considered healthy because of the resveratrol from grape skins but the process of fermentation and its numerous effects on mind and body is overlooked. At one moment coffee is good then at another it is not. This confuses the masses making the issue a matter of perspective but what should he guiding principle in selecting what is considered healthy these days?
We need not go further that the first book in the bible Genesis. There are three principles that serve as a sure guide. In Genesis 3:6 KJV it states "And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof...."
The scripture establishes God's intended effect and benefit of food. Eve's rationale for selection was made on good grounds but failed Gods test of obedience in partaking of the forbidden; Genesis 2:9 also confirms this point.
1. The First Principle and Question is: Is It Good for Food? In Proverbs 30:8 KJV Solomon prayed that he be "fed with food convenient for him." The Hebrew root word "Choq" alludes to the laws of health. Which means foods that are approved by Natures laws. Man was taken from the dust of the ground (Gen 2:7) and therefore requires the very substance of that dust to sustain his body. Many know of this term as nutrients and that is why food beneficial for human sustenance should be from the ground Gen 2:9 and Gen 3:18 establishes this. Therefore, the Carbohydrates, Fats and Proteins along with the Iodine, Magnesium, Phosphorus etc. should come from the ground. This eliminates the dependence on processed and ultra processed foods that are devoid of nutrients. One Health publication states:
"The processed food industry loads fat, sugar, and salt into their products because they are cheap. They use chemicals to change the cheap, raw materials into brightly colored, tasty products with long shelf life" (3)
One prolific writer sums up good food selection best in the following quote:
"Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet." Ministry Of Healing Page 296.1
It is important to know that not because a food item is from the ground means it is good for food as some may be toxic or harmful to health such as teas that have caffeine in them. Such foods would face double elimination with principle 3 below.
- The Second Principle and Question: "Is it Pleasant to the Eyes?"
Foods from nature that grow well are bright and vary in color, food manufacturers recognize this and do their best to meet nature by adding colorants and dyes that are harmful to health. The interesting thing about natural foods is that the antioxidants that fight cancer radicals and provide other benefits is the very thing that give its color. Anthocyanins is what makes Blueberry blue, and contributes the purple and red pigments to purple onion and tomatoes. The benefit is that it also helps to reduce blood pressure and improve brain function. However, Anthocyanins are just one sub group of flavonoids, see the diagram below. Notice that medicinal plants also carry the same properties confirming Genesis 3:18 KJV of the beneficial nature of herbs.
Diagram Showing Various Flavonoids and there Food Group Connections (4)
The processed foods we eat may be delightful to the eye but the following is a list of effects that are opposite to Nature's Flavonoids:
The list is endless but shows very much that the enemy of mankind imitates much of God's wisdom to accomplish unhealthful ends. The Principle of pleasant to the eyes can also be applicable to meal preparations which must have proper combinations for it to be beneficial.
- Cochineal (Red) - Life Threatening allergic reactions
- Yellow dye # 6 - Abdominal Pain and Vomitting
- Citrus Red #2 - Carcinogenic
- FD&C Blue #1 - Skin & Eye irritant allergen
- FD&C Green # 3 - Tumours
- E102 Tartrazine - Hyperactivity, asthma and rashes (5)
3. The Third Principle and Most Important Question: "Will It Make One Wise?":
Yes, the food we eat has an impact on our perception, judgement and the choices we make. Isaiah 7:15 confirms that: "Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good." Every article of food placed in our mouths makes a contribution as to who we become hence the words: "You are what you eat". It is known that overeating even of good things affect the ability to put forward mental effort and creates a feeling of physical languor. Any food that has excitotoxins and other stimulants are extremely dangerous and would be eliminated under this principle as a choice for food. Excitotoxins which are amino acids serve as neurotransmitters in the brain, such as glutamate, aspartate and cysteine. With that Family Health Guide page 902 states"
"The excitotoxins stimulate the neuron brain cells so vigorously, that the cells die of exhaustion! This effect is especially seen in the hypothalamus and temporal lobes which control behavior, emotions, onset puberty, sleep cycle, hormones, immunity, and a number of other body functions. Short term memory and ability to learn are also affected."
Eating foods such as canned soup, fast foods, junk food or foods from Chinese Restaurants are likely to contain MSG which is an excitotoxin. MSG can be found in textured vegetarian proteins commonly called vege-meat and yeast extract, seasoning spices, malt flavoring, bouillon and broth just to name a few.
It gets more interesting as there are certain foods from nature such as tobacco, coffee, teas, spices and certain herbs that affect our judgement in a negative way and would render us mentally weak.
Fortunately God has given us foods that are guaranteed to contribute to sound judgement and those foods would have already been selected in addition to the previous two principles. Without listing, the majority of plant based foods affect judgement by there natural antioxidants and phytochemicals and balance of other nutrients they possess. Notable foods include Walnut, Flaxseed and Chia seeds promotes cognitive health through its Omega-3 fatty acid property.
With these three principles you can safely guide your selection of healthy foods and with more study that will be coming through the Healthy Reforms platform.
