Choked When Thorns Are In the Heart

Turning Points Series Quote #2

Quote #2

"He also that receiveth seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful." Luke 8:4-15 KJV

"Luke specifies the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and pleasures of this life. These are what choke the word, the growing spiritual seed. The soul ceases to draw nourishment from Christ, and spirituality dies out of the heart.Christ Object Lessons Pages 46-50

Characteristics of those among Thorns.

  • Cut off certain sins but has not uprooted it from the heart.
  • The cares of this life separate them from the Saviour.
  • Bent on acquiring wealth to the neglect of spiritual things. No time for prayer, bible study & service for God.
  • Allow good things to crowd out devotion.
  • Service marred by desire for supremacy, and the harsh, unlovely traits of the unsubdued heart.
  • Riches, instead of awakening gratitude to God, lead to the exaltation of self. Forgetting their obligation to their fellow men.
  • Allow their minds to be consumed with another frist priority than the kingdom of God. School, Position & Relationships.

Grace can thrive only in the heart that is being constantly prepared for the precious seeds of truth. The Thorns of sin will grow in any soil; they need no cultivation; but grace must be carefully cultivated. The briers and thorns are always ready to spring up, and the work of purification must advance continually. If the heart is not kept under the control of God, if the Holy Spirit does not work unceasingly to refine and enoble the character, the old habits will reveal themselves in the life.
